My grandpa passed away on the 27th of December 2022.

All of a sudden, I couldn't stop my tears, even though mum kept saying he had been sick for a while and left peacefully at the age of 87.

Lunar New Year could never be the same without him, and no one could cook ba si di gua (Chinese candied sweet potatoes) like him.

Ba si (pull silk) di gua (sweet potato), which is popular in Dongbei in Northeast China, is named after the stretchy, candy threads that this sweet potato dish is known for.

In Melbourne, I tried to cook this dish on my own. It took many attempts to get this dish right.

Like other inexperienced cooks, I had so many things go wrong. My biggest mistake was when I didn't cook the sugar properly before tossing it onto the sweet potatoes. I needed to wait until I saw bubbles before adding the potatoes.

My husband also thought it was too sugary. The recipe is quite sweet, so I reduced the amount the next time I made it.

Not oiling the plate was another mistake. This meant the sugar cane stuck to the plate. And even though I made some gold threads, they weren't fun to stretch.

Additionally, I deep-fried the sweet potatoes too much. Australian sweet potatoes don't need much time to fry before they turn golden brown.

As I thought to read it with my kids in Chinese, but instead they asked me to translate in English (with my own words 🙈)

I just want to say that “Bilingual reading” with kids may sound fun and meaningful. However, the reality is always the other way around.

Reading could become more complicated than just choosing a book every day, especially when you have 2 or more languages going on at home.

My kids are ABCs (Australian born Bangladeshi Chinese), four people and three languages at home. With reading, the challenges are not limited to the language of the books, but to whether or not we can read in the target language and what your approach to reading is. While some families might see reading as a task, other families might see it as an important opportunity to bond.

As parents, we can try to offer as much exposure as we can to the target -or heritage language and culture, yet kids will always live in a different reality outside the door - their primary language is always English.

Sometimes, I try to speak in Mandarin, but my kids always response me in English, because they know Mum and Dad can speak English.

We have so many books. Most of books are English, only a few are bilingual books.

The English ones are mainly read by my husband or themselves. However, my view is if they want it to be read in English or if is to challenging to be translated in Chinese, I just let them read it in English… I guess there is no certain rules for reading, as long as they love reading 📖

The realtime translation in a mixed marriage is always a big challenge🤦🏻‍♀️Even social nicety can turn into an epic task.

For instance, when my mum asked me how long it took my in-laws' flight to get to Australia, and how they felt about the weather in Mandarin, I needed to make sure I used the correct words and accurately translated the whole thing to my husband in English, then he would translate it from English to his parents in Bengali, so that everyone could get the same message without (much) misunderstanding.

Language acrobats aside, we were overwhelmed with our little ones. In theory, the thought of having four extra pairs of hands-on deck seemed dreamy. But what made it unexpectedly tough was that our respective parents wanted to look after our kids in their own well-meaning, yet painfully specific way🙈

But looking back, we might have been too hard on our parents. Their kindness and patience won the day❤️

Great character interactions but after the initial intrigue this turned into a relatively routine plot with a pretty obvious central villain. Still, this series kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page.
